DRN Class Action Goes to Trial — $57 Billion at Stake for the Industry's Primary LPR Data Provider

Source: CURepossession  ·  May 2026

Trial began May 17, 2026 in San Diego County Superior Court in Mata v. Digital Recognition Network, Inc. — a class action alleging DRN violated California's Automated License Plate Recognition statute by capturing, storing, and selling vehicle location data for millions of California drivers without consent. If the plaintiff class prevails, DRN faces potential liability of up to $57 billion ($2,500 per person across a class of up to 23 million Californians). DRN is the dominant ALPR data infrastructure provider for the recovery industry, generating tens of millions of plate scans monthly across the networks that repo agencies use daily for vehicle location. The case, originally filed in 2021 and granted class action status last year, is the first major jury test of whether private-sector ALPR aggregation networks operate within California privacy law — and the trial is actively underway now.

What This Means for Repo Ops

DRN is not peripheral to this industry — it is the infrastructure that most agencies rely on to locate vehicles before assignment. A plaintiff verdict would trigger copycat litigation in other states with ALPR privacy statutes and could force operational changes to how DRN data is collected, stored, and shared with recovery networks. Agencies operating in California, or receiving DRN scan data from California-sourced plates, have active exposure now. Compliance teams at lenders and forwarders relying on DRN-integrated skip trace tools should be tracking this trial and reviewing their data use agreements with DRN and connected vendors.
